spicy macadamia pretzels…& a healthy tailgate recipe roundup!

a hot & spicy snack (secretly made healthier!) just in time for game-day.  in the words of my husband… “crack pretzels.”

spicy macadamia pretzels

a nearby grocery store was having a “buy nothing, get as many as you want free” sale on pretzels the other day…
(i’m totally serious.)  my husband, of course, comes home with nothing less than a year’s supply.

when life hands you free pretzels… you turn it into something hottt!

with the 2013 football season kicking off this week, i like to think of the free surplus of pretzels as divine inspiration for this new recipe post!  then i got to thinking…why only limit you to one game-day recipe??  why not do a healthy tailgate recipe roundup?!?  done. :)

for these pretzels, i used macadamia nut oil instead of canola or vegetable oil… it’s a much more nutrient dense fat and contains tons of antioxidants!  {more about mac oil here}

let me tell you… these babies are spicy!!  you can take the heat down a notch by cutting the amount of cayenne & sriracha in half… or just eliminate completely if you’re a weenie. ;)  these pretzels leave the most delicious heat in your mouth afterwards… which might be why they are so addictive…

my husband informed me this was the second “crack recipe” i’ve posted this week! :)

ingredients

  • 1 lb bag of pretzels (pick your style)
  • 1/3 c macadamia nut oil (i used garlic infused mac oil cuz that's all i had on hand...still delish!)
  • 1 packet spicy ranch dips mix (or regular)
  • 2 tsp cayenne
  • 2 tsp lemon pepper
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp sriracha (rooster sauce)

instructions

  1. transfer 1/2 of the pretzels into a 1 gallon zip lock bag. (reserve the rest for step 4)
  2. in a separate bowl, mix together the remaining ingredients for the seasoning.
  3. pour 1/3-1/2 of the mixture over the pretzels in the bag.
  4. lock the bag and coat these pretzels with seasoning before adding remaining pretzels and spice.
  5. evenly coat pretzels and let sit, sealed in the bag, for a few hours (or overnight).
  6. preheat the oven to 200 degrees.
  7. spread out pretzels on baking sheet and put in the oven for about 40 minutes. (pretzels do not have to be in a single layer...just get in there after about 20 minutes and stir things up a bit!)
  8. let the pretzels cool before eating.
